At NAB, Adobe Systems renewed its longstanding commitment to the video market with a series of innovative products and initiatives aimed at solving customer challenges in content creation, delivery, and playback.

Here are the NAB announcements that ProMax felt may impact your business:

Sony XDCAM support
The new 3.2 update in Adobe® Premiere® Pro CS3 adds native support for the Sony XDCAM EX camera format, providing a true file-based workflow without transcoding or rewrapping, providing a software-only, tapeless High Definition (HD) workflow—from capture to output. This underscores Adobe's commitment to integrate file-based camera formats into its line of professional video products. Panasonic P2 and Sony XDCAM EX are solid-state recording formats for video production that eliminate tape from the workflow, reducing the time it takes editors to find a specific scene and eliminating the need to digitize footage from tape. With rich support for file-based camera formats, Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 provides a rapid, efficient, HD workflow.

The compatibility update for Sony XDCAM EX is available immediately and delivered for free to all Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 customers.

Cinema DNG
Adobe announced that it is leading an industry-wide initiative to define an open file format for digital cinema files to streamline workflows and ensure easy archiving and exchange. Leveraging Adobe’s successful Digital Negative Specification (DNG) file format as a foundation, Adobe is working with a broad coalition of leading camera manufacturers, including RED, Panavision, Silicon Imaging, Dalsa, Weisscam, and ARRI--along with software vendors, including Iridas and The Foundry and codec provider CineForm--to define the requirements for an open, publicly documented CinemaDNG file format that will lend predictability and consistency to digital production workflows.

Rebate Offer for Avid Liquid and Xpress Users
US and Canada Avid Liquid and Xpress users purchasing full retail versions of CS3 Production Premium or Premiere Pro CS3 from the Adobe store or a participating reseller from now until May 31 are eligible to receive a mail-in rebate of US$500 for Production Premium or US$300 for Adobe Premiere Pro. MOTU Announces Adobe Premiere Support for V3HD on Windows

The V3HD is the first and only video capture/playback solution for Premiere Pro CS3 that provides hardware-accelerated DVCProHD (P2) capture from any HD video input, including HD component or HD-SDI sources. Avid Ends Xpress, Reduces Price of Composer

WOW! After Avid's pullout from the NAB show, we've all been waiting to see what their next move would be. It looks like we got it in the form of a press release this morning. Avid has announced their multi-tiered "New Thinking" strategy, the first phase of which includes the simplification of their product line, new software pricing, updated support services and new online community resources. This product simplification means end to development and upgrades of their Xpress product line along with a price reduction on upgrades, new versions, and academic versions of their Media Composer software.

So, if you just purchased Media Composer software this year, you may be eligible for a credit from AVID on future purchases. If on the other hand you purchased Xpress Pro this year, then now is the time to call your ProMax rep and get a Media Composer upgrade on order now. It's only $495 to upgrade from Xpress Pro! It's quite clear what Avid intends to do here, particularly as it relates to Final Cut Studio. If part of their next tier is to allow for the use of 3rd party hardware with their Media Composer software, they may be onto something in terms of a competitor to Apple in the small-to-medium post production business segment. Frankly, I'm not sure what other approach they could take to make a $2495.00 software price point appealing, unless they really take turns to focus on streamlining tapeless workflows with all the major manufacturers.

Another interesting plot to watch is the emergence of another competitor on the video IO hardware front on the Mac. Who could it be?

Apple and Avid Pull Out of NAB

It is an understatement to say that the industry was shocked when Avid announced they were not going to exhibit on the NAB show floor in 2008. At least as far as the South Hall Lower Level is concerned, besides the long line at Starbucks, Avid IS what you saw when you entered.

More recently, the Apple rumor mill had started to churn as if it were the weeks leading up to so many a MacWorld Expo, but this time it wasn’t speculation about the thinnest, fastest or lightest anything; rather, it was about whether Apple would follow in its first-initial-sharing brother Avid’s footsteps by pulling the plug on its NAB exhibit as well.

Apple’s rumored pullout became a reality in a very understated and brief announcement from a company spokesman. As expected, the forums and newsgroups were abuzz with renewed fervor as to why all this had come about. With Avid, it seemed the consensus of public opinion was that business was suffering and the NAB cash cow was a casualty of cutbacks. Compare and contrast this to the public's reaction after Apple had opted out, where the most common comment seemed to be that while business was solid and they had cash in the bank, they weren't releasing anything new and really didn't need to be there (those interested in Final Cut Server, among other things, would beg to differ). The point is that, in the court of public opinion, Avid needed to cut NAB from their roster, whereas Apple just didn't want to do it.

Regardless of the motivating factors behind the decisions these respective companies made, less common were the discussions regarding the efficacy of the NAB or other trade shows for these or any of the exhibiting companies, particularly with respect to the resources involved in producing and staffing a booth and the return on these investments.

Whether an exhibitor or attendee, these events transpiring gave us pause to rethink our perspective in terms of why we go to the big show. Both Apple and Avid stated that they didn't feel this was the best way to get through to their customers. They felt their money was better spent in other ways.

Similarly spirited questions could be asked from the perspective of the attendee. Is this the best vehicle for my company to get the information we need to make purchasing decisions? What am I going to find at NAB that I can't get other places? What is the return on investment for us using valuable company resources attending this trade show? What is the trade off for attending? As for an exhibitor, the costs for an attendee are not an inexpensive proposition. Between the outright costs of attending and the revenue opportunities lost by being away from the studio, things can add up quickly.

Charles McConathy, the founder and former President/CEO had some strong opinions on this. Charles had an uncanny ability to anticipate industry trends and made many risky and successful decisions based on his intuition. He used to talk about the changing face of the trade show and how technology would create a virtual trade show and make obsolete the traditional monolithic and costly venues.

The Internet and new media have already realized much of his vision of the virtual trade show. It's not just images, features, and specifications on a static web page anymore. Now there are videos, peer and industry reviews, how-tos, testimonials, user groups, forums, and the list goes on. In fact, often times there is too much information from which to choose. Add to that the concerns of source credibility, whether it be guerilla marketing or just a misinformed but well-meaning contributor. Wikipedia seems to have a page about everything these days, but it is prudent to be critical of the sources of information found here.

In light of all this, we here at ProMax asked ourselves these same questions. NAB has always been a demonstrable success for us. But of all the marketing opportunities out there, is NAB the best thing for our business and, more importantly, for our customers? We still plan to exhibit in 2008, and are still hosting our 13th Annual Digital Café as well. The NAB forum gives us our opportunity to see our customers – many of which have been coming to NAB for more years than we have – face-to-face, and conversely affords our customers an opportunity to see us and put a face to a name and to personalize our relationships. It allows us to meet prospects and show that we are a bona fide, established entity that has been around for more than 13 years and will be there for them 13 years from now. When they need support, additional services, or advice on how to grow their business, we’ll be there to provide them with the right solutions and information to meet their needs. As with NAB, our Digital Café is all about relationships. It’s about camaraderie and getting away from the office to wallow in lust for the newest technologies and innovations in our industry, to touch the gear and see it work (or not) in person, and share some quality time with our otherwise virtual-only brethren.

Apple and Avid both plan to be in Las Vegas during NAB and will have some presence off the show floor, but pulling out of NAB proper has some pretty far-reaching, broad implications. These are the big boys that make the headlines, which begs the question of how many smaller companies, at least in the post production segment, may have changed their plans for the show, if not this year then in 2009. We’re certain that every exhibitor has had the same discussion we’ve had here at ProMax, and that NAB and trade shows in general will be more carefully scrutinized as marketing vehicles. It will be interesting to see the effects on NAB in 2008 and into the future.

ProMax's Input Devices Video

INPUT DEVICES

In the latest "ProMax Presents" video we explore the interface between high definition cameras, various input devices and computer systems. As cameras transition from tape to file based recording, new techniques and equipment are required to capture the video data. There are several methods of inputing the data from the camera to the computer.

File-based input devices are digital recorders taking direct input onto a medium that allows immediate random access of the files for editing.

File Transfer input devices take files recorded in camera, on a file based medium and transfer them later, using an intermediary device to a computer editing system.

Direct Conversion Input methods accept video data through a device and then convert the data to an editable file format for capture in a computer editing system. These devices can also be used for playback to an external HD monitor.

Regardless of your camera, your recording medium, your capture device or your software, ProMax has the solution to simplify your job.

A Night with PVN

ProMax had the opportunity to spend an evening with PVN (Professional Videographer's Network) last night in Irvine, CA. We were pleased to see the enthusiastic standing room-only crowd.

The Sony PMW-EX1 is a very hot item right now, and it and the subsequent post-production workflow were featured once again. Val Reynolds and Paul Lee were on hand from Sony, Val from the Sales side and Paul from the technical side.

It was a standing room-only crowd at Wednesday's monthly PVN meeting.

The PVN meetings are great as they start out with a meet-and-greet at 6:30. They also feature a free or for sale table where members can bring in video equipment and offer it for sale or as a giveaway. At 7:00, Petr Hasa, the current President of PVN, went over the current issues of PVN, then introduced Val Reynolds and Sony.

Val covered the specifics of the camera and took a lot of questions about it and how it was different, how it compared to some of their previous cameras, as well as how it compared to some of the competitor's camera.

Several PMW-EX1 cameras were available for the PVN members to get their hands on.

Following Val, Curtis Harris and Rob Brambila, both System Engineers from ProMax, discussed the file-based tapeless workflow with Final Cut Pro and touched on other NLEs such as Premiere and Avid. Also covered was the importance of having a physical back-up for your footage when working with a file-based workflow.

We also had a nice prizes we gave away all night, including ProMax t-shirts and coffee mugs and Sony had a few giveaways as well. For the raffle, we gave away a FireMax 250GB Combo Drive, a SteadyTracker Ultralite, a Sony CyberShot camera, and a Vortex Media DVD for the PMW-EX1.

PVN President Petr Hasa was a gracious host for Sony and ProMax.

LAFCPUG's Holiday Toys Event with ProMax

We had a great time last Wednesday night at the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User's Group (LAFCPUG) Special Holiday Toys Event. The night was originally set up as a result of the buzz about Sony's new PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX camera at HD Expo, and we wanted to share what we knew about the camera with the great LAFCPUG community.

The night started out with Stump the Gurus who were wearing Santa hats. Larry Jordan followed up with a great tip for the all the Final Cut editors, and then Shane Ross had a great presentation on the Matrox MXO. Before the break, the guys from redrockmicro showing off some really cool cinema accessories for camcorders.

After the break came the highlight of the night: The XDCAM EX camcorder and workflow presentation. Sony had all hands on deck, featuring Val Reynolds, our longtime Sales Representative and all-around good guy. He tag-teamed with Doug Jensen, Owner of Vortex Media and author of the Hands-On Workshop DVD for the PMW-EX1 camera, and our own Curtis Harris who talked about a simple and elegant workflow with Final Cut Pro 6.

Doug Jensen, owner of Vortex Media, did a great job tagteaming with Curtis Harris of ProMax and Val Reynolds of Sony.

ProMax had a camera available all night in the lower lobby for hands-on experience, as well as one of the new 24" Sony LUMA monitors which was an eye-catcher with the beautiful footage provided by both Doug Jensen and Jody Eldred, both experts on the new Sony PMW-EX1 camcorder. A strong contingent of Sony representatives were on hand to answer any questions about the new XDCAM EX camcorder and recent released LUMA displays.

ProMax had a MacBook Pro, Matrox MXO, 24" Sony LUMA, and PMW-EX1 set up to show the workflow and quality of the footage in person.

Followed closely on the heels of the RED event last month, there was another loud buzz surrounding the great new Holiday Toys in the halls of the Barnsdall Gallery Theater. For those that were able to make it, we thank you for stopping by.

LAFCPUG's Red Night with ProMax

ProMax had a great time up at the LAFCPUG last night, and here are a few pics from the event. It was SOLD OUT for several weeks leading up to the event, and the buzz about some of the sexiest technology out in the industry for several years was palpable.

The guests started coming in early and lining the lower lobby to ensure a good seat for the show. They peered through the theater doors for a glimpse of the Red footage that was looping on the screen as the speakers dialed in their presentations.

The evening was primarily devoted to the Red Digital Cinema Camera and FCP workflow. After Stump the Gurus, our own Curtis Harris discussed the latest and greatest RED to FCP workflow techniques and file management. We had a special guest appearance by our good friend Ted Schilowitz as he and Curtis tag teamed as they covered the latest news on working with footage shot with the Red Digital Cinema Camera in the post production envrivonment. Curits even plugged his three very cute kids to loosen up the audience a bit.

There was a full house for the enitre evening.

Todd Prives of GenArts followed up with coverage of the very cool new Sapphire Plug-ins. They just released version 2.0, and they only added more cool capabilities to an already great product. Nick Jushchyshyn showed the Red Camera footage as it relates to visual effects and addressed concerns about how the Red footage will key and track for larger productions. The Pixel Corps tested these two issues specifically and will show the results.

The ProMax table had lots of activity on this busy night.

The highlight of the night were the Red Ninjas, most notably Evin Grant, Brook Willard and Blair Paulsen, who showed footage and talked about using the Red as well as sharing the latest updates on the camera. They actually shot some footage live and took it all the way into Final Cut Pro step-by-step. To any doubters who may still exist about whether or not this camera is vaporware, it's time to take another look at some of the great work that is being created using this impressive new camera.

The break was crazy! We've been to quite a few LAFCPUG meetings, and this had to have been one of the fullest, busiest, funnest -- you name it. We also had the new Sony XDCAM EX camera, the PMW-EX1. There were a lot of people really surprised and pleased to be able to touch, feel, and talk about the camera. It is truly an exciting time right now with the cutting edge of the industry technology making all these leaps and changes to the exisitng paradigms of production and post production.

Seeing Red!

New REDCODE RAW codec supports RT playback in Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 and editing of the QuickTime Reference movies generated in camera. Also, play REDCODE RAW movies directly from QuickTime Player or other QuickTime enabled application.

REDCODE Raw codec supports RT playback and editing of the QuickTime Reference movies generated in camera. Both 2K and 1K QuickTime Reference movies are supported in this release.

When you transfer media from your CF cards to your hard drive for editing, please be sure you take the Native .R3D files, the QuickTime Reference movies and the Magazine Profile from the CF card. They should all live together in the same folder to allow for offline/online editing and finishing. After you have imported your QuickTime Reference movies into Final Cut Pro do not move the original files to another location. If you move the RED files and media after importing the QuickTime Reference movies into FCP you will lose the connection to the FCP master clips and will have to reconnect the files manually.

Import the QuickTime Reference movie size you wish to edit with (2K or 1K) and ensure that your clip parameters match your FCP sequence parameters. FCP will prompt you to automatically match the sequence settings with your clip when you make your first edit into a new timeline. Set your timeline to Unlimited RT and Medium or Low quality playback using the timeline’s RT pulldown menu.

For this release, import your 2K or 1K QuickTime reference movies into your project by using File: Import Files or File: Import Folder. The advanced RED Log and Transfer interface is in the final stages of development and the installer package will be available from RED at this web link in the coming weeks. RED’s integration for full FCP Studio 2 functionality with RED camera workflows is in continuing development.

Depending on your system configuration, you may see less than full frame rate playback. RED recommends the current top end configuration of a MacPro with 8 cores, fast RAID 0 striped drives and a minimum of 4 gigabytes of RAM if you plan on editing the 2K QuickTime Reference movies. RED recommends for RT editing on a MacBook Pro that you use the 1K QuickTime Reference movies or smaller frame sizes that can be generated with the RED Alert! Program provided to camera owners by RED.
